Five tips to get your website noticed

Here are a few tips on how to get your website noticed a little better with the likes of Google.

  • Always make sure that your title tags, which are the description of the page that appears in the top of a browser, are relevant to the page. So if your page is about widgets then having a page title that reads My Company name may not be the best solution. Try to incorporate your main widget keywords into the title. You wouldn't pick up a book titled My Little Pony and expect to see anything other than My Little Pony in it would you?

  • H1 tags. These are classed as headings and should reflect what is going to be present in the following paragraph. The same can be said of H2and H3 tags.
  • Links. Any keywords used in the main content of your page should have a link through to a page describing that keyword a little better.
  • Alt tags. These are tags that are written in behind images. As an example, if you had an image of your house you may write your alt tag as this is a picture of my house. If for some reason your viewer cannot see the images on your page then at least there is a description of what the image should be. It is also very important to use this tag from an accessible point of view as well.
  • Finally, write your web pages for your audience and don't make the mistake of writing them for the search engines. In the last few years search engines have become very clever and they can tell if the page is genuine or not. This will increase your chances of getting a better search engine placement.
